Continents, countries — perhaps in a hierarchial fashion so we can have both "africa" and "africa: republic of chad", centuries, major periods commonly referred to (e.g., renaissance, early modern), schools of thought (e.g., feminism, economic, etc.).
Possibly also by century - definitions of period being one of things that has nearly gotten us kicked out of pubs in the past (this is why you don't take the respective chairs of Medieval and Early Modern out drinking at the same time).
